How did you hear about/find us?

My brother (Raymond Hall) and friend (Janet Taylor) were already members.

What is your musical background/history?

I have played Tuba since 5th grade. (Wow! That is over 40 years.) We watched a lot of Lawrence Welk when we were kids.  I thought the Tuba was fun. I still remember seeing this as a kid. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syKP_y4SHR8)

I Played at Huffman High School. (Go Vikings).  I had the honor of getting to start playing with the high school band while I was in 8th grade because they wanted to have 4 tubas on the field.  Then after marching season, the director asked me to play for concert season as well.   I can’t say I was first chair in the All-State Red Band (Long Story) but I did have the highest score of all the tuba players at All-State. Because of the mix-up, the band director at Alabama wanted to hear me play during All-State and recruited me away from Auburn (Thank you, Ms. Scott).

While at Alabama, I played for 5 years in the Million Dollar Band and played in the Concert Band for 4 years. I also worked on the Band Staff for 3 years.  That was a fun job. We lined the field, copied music/field charts, checked in/out uniforms. This was also the first time I ever saw a fake chart. I was asked to play at Storyville one night to fill in for a dixieland group. They said no practice needed, just wing it, we have charts.

I started playing the Bass Guitar around 2003 since there wasn’t much call for tuba anymore.  I played bass in a Bar/Rock band for a few years called KoverDown. (You can here us here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIy1_tnSPV8)  I play bass quitar at church each week.  I also get called to play for musicals at some of the community theaters around Atlanta. Apparently the numbers of bass players who sightread actual sheet music is much smaller than you would think.

What is your favorite “Band Song” to play?

I like most everything we play. I like playing a variety of music so I don’t have a real favorite. I guess my favorite music is when we sightread.  I love the challenge.

What do you do when you are not playing music? (work/hobbies/for fun???)

I work for AT&T as a Sr. Data Analyst.  I have been a programmer in the past as well as a team lead.  Other than music, my hobby would be making balloon art.  I have done this professionally as a side gig. I am very selective when I do this these days. (I don’t do birthday parties and also like to be sure that I can people watch!)

What type of animal/breed of dog/cat/bird/fish/other etc…. best reflects your personality and why?

Probably a service animal of some sorts.  I am usually pretty easy going and like to help others.  After all, I am an Eagle Scout.

What is your superpower?

My super power is making balloon art.  I have done this for small birthday parties and large festivals.  I would never have believed that I could make money doing this. Granted lately, what I make usually gets put back into buying balloons for free events that I will work at. It’s a fun way to get to meet people and be a part of each other’s lives for a brief few minutes.
