How did you hear about/find us?
My then boyfriend (now husband!) William knew I was looking for something musical to do--and he saw the posting on the Crestwood South neighborhood page. I was nervous at first (I hadn't played since my kids were in high school back in the early 2000's) but Stacey kept after me and I finally gave in. I love the camaraderie here!

What is your musical background/history?
-
I started piano at 4, with my cousin who is 11 months older than I. She dropped out after a couple of years, but I kept at it until I was in high school. The elementary school I was in started band in 5th grade, and since I had braces the sales rep suggested the flute. Played all through junior high and high school, was a majorette, and band secretary--Clearwater High School Marching Grenadiers. Spent 4 years wearing wool uniforms in 90+ degree Florida heat! That's back when bands changed half-time shows every week.

Anyway, dropped out of band during college, but picked it back up after I got married the first time. Played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneer Band, and got several free trips to Disney World out of it. Dropped out for good when I had my kids ('86-90). Picked it up again when a friend asked me to join the community band in Tampa--it was a "for credit" night school course, but we played for free because we played Pomp and Circumstance for the night school graduation! I was the only flute for 2 years.

What is your favorite “Band Song” to play?
My favorite band song right now is Christmas Festival. Also love Zoot Suit Riot and Ghostbusters because William gets to join in!

What do you do when you are not playing music? (work/hobbies/for fun???)
-
When I'm not playing, I'm an independent contractor/paralegal for several attorneys downtown. The law practices cover mediation, plaintiff/civil work, criminal, probate, domestic relations, and juvenile court. I love to read, but don't really have time anymore. And I just "rescued" a bassoon that I plan on restoring (if I can find the UTube videos)!

What type of animal/breed of dog/cat/bird/fish/other etc…. best reflects your personality and why?
I had dogs growing up (my favorite breed is Border Collie/Aussie Shepherd). We have two cats now, one for each house. I love aquariums, especially the "glow-in-the-dark" fish. I need to set that up again ......

Tell us something fun! You know, like “That one time at band camp…” Or elsewhere. (funny anecdote/story/amazing coincidence/hidden talent/celebrity encounter, etc…)

The first pre-game show I was in in high school was after a day of heavy rain. The weather cleared, but the field was a sloppy mess. We made the shape of the United States, and I was the southern tip of Texas. This was on the near-field sideline at midfield, and the mud sucked both of my shoes right off my feet. I managed to keep my balance, but marched the rest of pre-game in my socks. The next Monday I made sure to go out and buy a pair of lace-up black shoes!

I've also had the "honor" of traveling with a drum corps during the summer tours for 5 years, generally 10,000+ miles each summer. My son plays mellophone, and I became the souvenir manager for his corps. It was fascinating to watch these kids, who didn't know each other at the start of the summer, bond into such a cohesive group. The friendships they make over the summer literally last a lifetime, and the time management skills they learn, not to mention how to do laundry on their own, make the $3,000 cost almost worth it.
